Aliakmonas is the longest river which rises, flows and discharges all in Greece. It has a total length of 297 kilometres and is made up of two smaller rivers, the Belitsa and the Zalovo. The snowy and historic mountains of Gramma and Voiou is where their source is found.
Its yearly flow is 2,030,000,000 cubic metres and it discharges into the Thermaic Gulf. Both the river and its name are ancient. The name Aliakmonas is made up and comes from the Als (alas. Sea) and the akmon (anvil)… Oceanus which girdled the earth, and Tithis one of the Titan daughters of Heaven and Earth, were Aliakmona's parents, according to myth.
In its course one comes across streams, torrents, tributaries – it flows through mountain gorges and valleys to end up at the delta of the Thermaic Gulf where it joins the deltas of the Axiou and the Loudia.
Its current is controlled by a man-made lake created by weirs which take in the waters from three hydro-electric dams. Almost the whole length of the river in the prefecture of Kozanis is made up of the man-made lake the Polyfitou which was made after the creation of the dam of the same name. Above the lake is the Serbian bridge which makes up part of the national road from Athens- Kozanis. The river Taphros (35 metres long) empties into the Aliakmona whch was designed to hold part of the waters which came from the drainage network of the previous Yiannitson lake.
About 35 different types of fish have been found in the Aliakmona river, around 30 of those are indigenous and the rest have been imported. Many of them are rare and one, the Mavrotsironi is found nowhere else in the world, it is in fact native only to the river.
On its long journey it comes across not only the water but civilization from the cities of Kastoria, Grevena, Kozani, Florina, Imathia and Pella, ending up in Thessaloniki.
